Mayorkun Shares How Davido Paved the Way for His Sony Music Africa Deal After Exiting DMW.
Afropop sensation Mayorkun has opened up about the key influence Davido had in shaping his post-DMW journey, revealing that the music heavyweight played a pivotal role in linking him with Sony Music Africa.
Mayorkun—fondly known as the “Mayor of Lagos”—initially rose to fame under Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), where he was signed from 2016 until 2021. Following his departure, he released his sophomore album Back In Office through Sony Music West Africa in October 2021—a milestone that, according to him, wouldn’t have happened without Davido’s behind-the-scenes support.
“Shout out to Davido for that as well—he facilitated the deal,” Mayorkun shared in a recent chat with 3Music TV. Though he remained tight-lipped on the finer details, the appreciation in his voice spoke volumes.
Now, the singer is gearing up for the release of his third studio album, Still The Mayor, slated to drop on June 13. Mayorkun teased that the project is more than just another album—it’s a bold continuation of his artistic journey.
“It’s a sequel. I wanted a title that would raise eyebrows—not about claiming space, but to spark curiosity,” he explained.
He also described Still The Mayor as his most challenging body of work yet, citing clearance issues and label red tape that caused delays.
“Music has changed. There are a lot more protocols these days,” he admitted. “But we’ve cleared all the hurdles. We just didn’t want any complications.”
With anticipation building and a legacy still in the making, Mayorkun seems ready to reaffirm why he’s still very much the Mayor in the game.
